The internet is full of pornography and other unwanted videos and images. That’s just a fact that any parent has to deal with at some point, when their children grow old enough to go online and use the internet (which is happening sooner than ever). The internet is also a revolutionary and unavoidable factor in the modern world and keeping your children away from it will set them back in comparison with their peers and limit both their opportunities to become proficient for an education and from keeping contact with their friends.

Some parenting groups have claimed that it’s natural for children to be interested in sexuality and the fact that they are exposed to pornographic content is only a natural evolution. Unfortunately, there is no basis for these claims. Actually the contrary seems to be the case. Studies have shown with certainty that children who watch porn before the age of 14 are much more likely to get a sexually transmitted disease, get pregnant and are at increased risk of being victims of sexual predators.

I think children and particularly teenagers should have some freedom to discover the world for themselves and that includes being naturally curious about sexuality, love and the other sex, but I don’t want their education about this to come from pornography which is in no way realistic and will teach them stereotypes that I believe are very harmful.

There are many ways to keep your children safe from pornography online. There are several free methods available. I have written about some free methods in another article (you can click the author), but I have found that these are not really adequate. What I have found to be the very best method is a two fold approach.

First of all, you should have some sort of internet monitoring software that automatically blocks pornography and second; you should talk with your children about these things. I don’t believe in saying that this or that is just ‘bad’, but I do believe that children are able to understand that some things are meant for adults only. Let your children be children. They grow up soon enough.
