Linkbaiting – Information & Advice

November 9th, 2010 No comments

Linkbaiting is a term used to describe the action of posting content that will tempt viewers of the content to link to that content from their own website. A successful linkbait can generate a huge influx of traffic in a very short space of time. It will also mean a massive increase in your search engine rankings as most search engines algorithms value the number of backlinks highly when deciding which page outranks another.

So how do you set the bait? There are a number of ways you can create a linkbait, and those come under four main umbrellas, all of which are detailed below.

Controversy – Controversy, it has to be said, does not mean slander, abuse or racism. A blog post or article offering an opposing viewpoint to another article or opinion is a great way to gain backlinks. Remember though, a successful controversial article must have sound reasoning and be able to relate to a large proportion of the readers; otherwise people will not read past the first sentence and certainly not want to pass the information to somebody else.

Up-to-date content – The internet offers users immediate reports of events happening around the globe twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. If you can offer a timely report on a current event and you can promote your article well enough, you will be able to generate traffic and backlinks as people read your article and create links to your website.

Funny, cool or crazy content – By far the most shared media on the internet is personal videos. With the introduction of video sharing websites such as YouTube, video viral marketing has seen its emergence into mainstream marketing. A well promoted video can generate a huge number of backlinks as long as it contains cool, crazy or funny content. One problem with this is that due to the main bulk of backlinks being deep in online forums, their value is not so great. Though every link will help!

Well written text – A well structured, well written article will always encourage a decent number of backlinks if promoted adequately. This is one of the more obvious ways as if somebody enjoys reading content, then the chances are that they will want to pass the content on to other people via a backlink.

Innovation is the general basis for effective linkbaiting. If you can supply internet users with new content that is educational, funny, informative or just plain odd, then you will have a good start at creating a linkbait snowball.

If you want to get top rankings in the various search engine, you absolutely have to get backlinks in order to do so. If you are able to have your customers search for your targeted keywords in Bing, Google, or Yahoo, and have your website show up on the first page, you will have a potential goldmine on your hands. So, how will you get these links from other websites?

In order to get backlinks from other websites, they must put your link up for a reason – barring giving them money to do so, you are only left with the option to provide fascinating and desirable content on your website that people will want to show to others. Articles, pictures, even videos and games are all content that would work, so you should be sure to incorporate it into your website.

You can absolutely get links, provided the content you provide is good enough that people will want to get to it. You can use a process called linkbaiting, wherein you make good, unique content that only you can provide, and having other people link to it because they want to show other people. After all, how can you beat the other guys if you are not doing anything to set yourself apart from them?

It is known that you can produce effective results with linkbaiting, and it is the most effective way to get the people to visit your website. If you just allocate a little bit of time to create the best linkbait you can, you will be sure to have hundreds of people linking to your website in the space of a few months. These will be highly effective and relevant links that will attract people interested in your niche.

Some people do not take the linkbaiting approach because they can not be bothered to spend the time coming up with content that is new and different. Instead they spend their time manually building links to their sites. There can really be no comparison between the effectiveness of the two techniques though. Linkbaiting is the hands down winner every time, so long as it is done correctly.

If you are not sure how to come up with a great piece of linkbait yourself, or you do not have to the time to do so, then you might want to consider hiring a company to create and promote some content for you. Such services are well-priced when you work out the overall cost per link in the long run. Just choose a company with a track record of coming up with effective linkbait and then sit back and watch your rankings rise.
